You are hereby invited to participate in this annual field excursion arranged by Siggerud GeoServices in co-operation with Fugro Multi Client Services.
It is often said that Svalbard could serve as a textbook in geology, neatly representing all the geological periods from the Precambrian through to the Quaternary. As in other arctic regions, the lack of vegetation offers geoscientists a superb opportunity to study the rocks with relative ease. Apart from the outstanding beauty of the barren landscape, Svalbard offers world-class geological sightings, enabling the study of everything from core details to full seismic-scale outcrops.
The main purpose of this field trip is to use these outcrops to illustrate depositional systems relevant for exploration geology. We will visit outcrops that feature the interrelationship between non-marine deposits, restricted to shallow marine deposits, syn-rift successions, and the generation of deep marine slope and basin floor deposits. All this will be discussed with reference to sequence stratigraphy.
